This letter was sent this afternoon via certified mail to the privacy officer of the UNR Student Health Center. Curious to how they respond, I eagerly look forward to what type of "policies" they will throw in my face. Even though I have the absolute most boring health record on the planet, this is much more about privacy and respect for student's personal information than anything else.
John Russellxxx Keystone Ave xxxReno, Nevada 89xxxPrivacy OfficerUNR Student Health CenterMail Stop 196 Reno, NV 89557To Whom This Concerns:My name is John Russell and I am an undergraduate student who recently used the University of Nevada, Reno Student Health Center. While filling out the paperwork in order to see a health professional, I was deeply disturbed with the health center’s privacy policy; specifically the portions of the policy where the health center is able to release my personal health information without requiring my authorization. I find it outrageous that such information, even limited information, is capable of being released behind my back to researchers, public databases, law-enforcement agencies simply for identification, marketers, and “business associates”. The expectation of privacy a student should be entitled to I feel is being grossly violated, and therefore I request that all of my personal health information the health center may have previously been able to release and disclose without requiring my authorization shall now require my written authorization prior to any action being taken. Again, I humbly request that the health center shall not disclose any of my personal health information without written authorization from me. Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to your reply.Sincerely,John Russell
